AS Connecto Eesti and AS Merko Infra entered into construction contracts with Elering AS for the Suur and Väike väin straits submarine cables
AS Connecto Eesti, AS Merko Infra and Elering AS have entered into construction contracts for the establishment of new submarine electricity cables between the mainland and Muhu Island and between Muhu Island and Saaremaa.
In the course of the work, two old and superannuated 35 kV submarine cables between the Rõuste and Tusti substations in the Suur väin strait will be replaced with one new 110 kV submarine cable. The total length of the Suur vain strait cable line is close to 11 km, of which the submarine part is 9.7 km. A new cell will be established in Rõuste substation for connecting the new cable. The contract is valued at approximately 9 million euros.
The total length of the new 110 kV cable through the Väike väin strait from Muhu Island to the new substation in Orissaare is 6.7 km, of which 4.7 km is undersea. The cost of the Väike vain strait cable is about 5.4 million euros.
The capacity of both of the straits cables is 520 amperes. In the submarine cable, all three phases are combined in one cable. The cable diameter is 190 mm and the weight is 67 kg per metre.
The submarine cables will be installed in the sea as one long cable, without extension couplings. A fibre-optic communications cable will be installed in the sea along with the new cable. The cable will be embedded in the seabed in both straits to reduce the risk of it being damaged by anchors, ridge ice and other external factors.
